Challenges players to work well on and off the ball in tight areas, with lots of transition included.
This practice requires high levels of concentration, intensity and technical ability, with opportunities to switch play and lots of transition moments.
Set up a playing area relative to the age and ability of your players. We’ve suggested using the penalty area and D, plus a wide channel marked out on either side, with two large goals.
Two equal teams play within the area. The aim is for teams to score, but they will earn a bonus goal if they score following one of their players being in possession in one of the wide areas.
Players can work on moving the ball quickly to create opportunities to switch the play, with players supporting both behind and in front of the ball to enable this. Movement off the ball is key to create space and opportunities to score, as is timing of runs into the wide channels to receive the ball. Another key element of this practice is transition, both from attack to defence and vice versa. Players need to react quickly to changes turn-overs in possession to take advantage of the available space or to deny the opponents time and space to score.
