There is nothing more satisfying than bending the ball from free-kicks or swerving it at goal from open play in and around the box. Watching a wall stretching up but unable to reach the ball as it hits the back of the net is the dream of every young player – and of every coach if they were really honest. MORE
Shielding the ball (U14 game)

Shielding the ball
WIN THE 1V1S
“Keep your body between ball and opponent” • “Use touch to keep opponent at arms length” • “Keep the ball close to your body”
Set up a 40 x 20 yards area split into three with the two 8-yard outer zones and a 24-yard inner zone.
Split your players into two teams of five with one player in each team becoming a sweeper, plus two goalkeepers.
The sweepers play in the outer zones defending the goal in that zone.
The teams play 4v4 in the centre zone but pair them up so they go 1v1 against the same player whether defending or attacking. Players stay in their zones.
In the final part of the session clear the zones and play a normal 6v6 game and see if your players have learned how to cover and defend 1v1.
How many players do I need?
We used 12 players for this game.
Defending 1v1 in midfield.
