I cannot second guess when we will all be out of this strange way of coaching with no opposed sessions but hopefully it will be fairly soon. To that end I continually remind myself that I will be going back to getting my players warmed up in a different way to how I am doing it at the moment.
Sure some things will be similar but numbers will be different and things like timing of the session will change. So I have been looking back at my arrivals activities over the past week and checking out what I need to do and need to update.
When you are planning out your coaching sessions you need to think about how to make arrival activities work for your team. Depending on their ages the needs of the drill that kick-starts the session will be different but one thing will be the same, they need to stretch bodies and be good fun.
And they need to be flexible so that when late comers arrive they can join in with the other players. Some drills work perfectly for this but others need a bit more instruction for the player.
Young players have to give their muscles a range of dynamic and progressive movements to prepare them for the game. If they don’t you’ll be risking them getting a injury when the game starts.
It is often a case of trial and error to see which activities your players respond to. Try the activities below and see how your players respond to them always bearing in mind the ages. So your U14s won’t want to play Bib pull away but will respond to Chase the cones.

Warm ups with a ball should be the thing you do just before the game starts but you can do other types of games when the players first get to a game or to training. Bib pull away is a good way to start and you don’t need to spend any time explaining the game – it is always great to get under way with a brisk run around.
Once you’ve got them running around let them have a drink when you can quickly explain the next warm up that will gear them up for the session you are coaching or the match they are taking part in. If you’re planning a session on pressing or you want them to press in a match Centre Circle Sorcery is one of the best ways to do this with plenty of pressing and tackling and movement off the ball. While Pass and Sprint is good for a possession based game.
You can get brains into gear on a cold morning by using Chase the Cones it makes players think about how they can complete the session before their best friends do.
