This session is formed of three drills that create scenarios for players to practice shooting from close range. It is always difficult to recreate this in training but is vital you do so MORE
Score goals in the New Year
Happy New Year!
One thing we all wish for in the New Year is that our teams score more goals and do so using the style of play we work on with our teams at training. Pass and move, get into good positions and create goal scoring chances.
One thing you can work on is getting your strikers to shoot at every opportunity from wherever they are on the pitch. Shooting from different areas is key to scoring more goals.
Try these four sessions to give your strikers a boost to their scoring skills for a net busting start to 2020:
Slick passing moves and mazy dribbles are all well and good, but there’s nothing quite like a good, old-fashioned wallop into the top corner from distance. Create some space and unleash a blistering effort from outside the penalty area with dip or swerve. During 2019 there have been many instances of long range shooting from the likes of Kevin de Bruyne. Shooting from distance is a fantastic high tempo session to get players to shoot from everywhere on the pitch.
Finishing matters, but the ability to bend a ball into the upper corner pales in comparison with the ability to get in position to take the shot like Raheem Sterling at Manchester City – those tap-ins are so important. Ghost in behind the defence, take up a dangerous position and wait for a precision pass, like Mo Salah does at Liverpool. Score from close range is my go-to session to practise this.
Bend free kicks around the wall or get the ball up and over. Unstoppable free-kicks gives you some ideas for scoring from a dead ball, but you can challenge your players to come up with even more imaginative ways to score.
