Create space to shoot

It’s not always necessary for an attacker to go past a defender in order to shoot – sometimes a trick or a feint creates enough space to get a strike at the target.

What this session is about

  1. Beating defenders in 1v1 situations.
  2. Scoring goals.
  3. Improving dribbling skills and close control.

What to think about

Players need to:

  • Dribble with their head up.
  • Slow down as they approach the defender.
  • Keep the ball within playing distance.
  • Commit the defender.
  • Use body feints and deceptive foot movements – e.g. Robinho Stepover.
  • Accelerate away from the defender.

What you get your players to do

Play on a 40 x 20 yard pitch with a cone in the middle and a goal at both ends. Two groups of players start from opposite right hand corners of the pitch, each with a ball.

Player 1 dribbles towards the cone, performs a trick (e.g. stepover), shimmies right and shoots at goal. He then joins the back of the opposite line and player 2 repeats.

Halfway through the session, switch the players to the left hand corners so they perform their ‘trick’ to the opposite side.

Player 1 dribbles from the right towards the central cone, does a trick, shimmies and gets in a shot. Player 2 then goes.

Development

Play on a 40 x 20 yard pitch with a goal and goalkeeper at one end. Place defenders to the left of the goal, attackers to the right. Place one cone 15 yards from the defenders, another 18 yards from the attackers.

On your call, attacker 1 (A1) dribbles a ball to his cone while defender 1 (D1) runs to his cone. This creates a 1v1 and A1 attempts to beat D1 with a trick and get a shot in on goal. After A1 has shot, he runs to the back of the opposite line to become a defender while D1 becomes an attacker and A2/ D2 attack on your call.

The attacker (A1) runs to his cone as does defender 1 (D1). A1 attempts to beat D1 and get in a shot. Players then join the opposite lines.

Game situation

Play 4v4 plus keepers on a 45 x 30 yard pitch with a goal at each end. There is a 15-yard endzone containing one defender with a 3v3 in the central zone. An attacker must dribble through, take on the defender and get in a shot.

One defender stays in each endzone. Play 3v3 in the central zone. An attacker dribbles into the endzone, beats the defender and shoots.
