Goalkeeper 1v1

A goalkeeper’s job is to make it as difficult as possible for an opposition striker to score in any situation. And
when it’s just the goalkeeper against a striker in a 1 v 1, it is essential that the goalkeeper uses all the tools within
his/her arsenal to make it as tough as possible for the striker to score.

What this session is about

Improving a goalkeeper’s effectiveness in 1v1 situations.

What to think about

  • What is the ideal starting position? Don’t stand on the goal-line, this makes the goal a larger target for the striker. The starting point should be off the goal-line.
  • What is the body shape? Make the goal as small as possible, hands out from body and low to ground, on toes, feet apart and knees bent – get close to the ground.
  • How can you make it difficult for the striker? Slightly arc your line of movement towards the striker, this will force the player one way – take the decision away from the opponent, forcing them where you want them to go.

Set-up

  • Penalty area
  • 6 yard wide goal

What you get your players to do

  1. Line up your strikers behind the central cone 25 yards out from goal.
  2. The goalkeeper should start on the 6 yard line.
  3. On your call, the striker attacks the goal with the ball at pace.
  4. The goalkeeper advances at pace to narrow the angle and make the save.

Development

  • Develop the session by having your strikers start alternately from the right and left.
  • Attacking from these wide areas will improve your goalkeepers’ understanding of angles and starting position.
Move towards the striker in an arc movement, forcing him to go one way or the other.
