This session improves shooting technique and gives players confidence to shoot from outside the penalty area. It helps players to see an opportunity and take it with a shot from long range. Some players will be able to do it straight away but others will take time – put accuracy over power when they first try. MORE
Hold off a defender and shoot
This drill improves the ability to cope with the pressure of having a defender breathing down your neck when through on goal with only the keeper to beat.
What this session is about
- Making effective runs behind the opposition defence.
What to think about
- Tell/show where they want the ball.
- Pass into the space and into the attacker’s path – not to his feet.
- ‘Explode’ on to the pass – time the breakaway run with the pass.
- Control the ball and look to score as quickly as possible.
- Run with the ball (cut across chasing defender etc).
- Shoot (observe the keeper’s position and decide upon technique – chip, sidefoot, instep, dribble around the keeper?)

What you get your players to do
Set up a cone triangle with each side measuring 2 yards, around 30 yards from a manned goal. The base of the triangle is nearest the goal. You stand at the base with several balls.
Either side of the tip of the triangle place two lines of players. On your call, the first player in each line runs forward. You pass a ball into the path of one of them. This player is the attacker and is pursued by the other one (defender). The attacker runs forward and gets a shot on goal. Both players return to the back of their lines.
Play on half a pitch using one manned goal. Mark out a 30 x 25 yard box around half way.
In the box play 4v3 with the attackers looking to complete a number of consecutive passes. Once this number has been achieved, a pass is delivered outside the box – towards goal – for an attacker to run on to. One defender can give chase but has to leave the box from the side. The attacker runs through and shoots. Both players rejoin their teams. Rotate attack and defence at regular intervals.
Play 6v6 (A v B) on a 60 x 40 yard pitch with two manned goals. Team A start in possession with every player in their half. Team A try to set up an attacker with a pass along the ground into Team B’s half. One attacker can chase this pass and one defender pursues. One the shot is taken, every player moves to Team B’s half and the process is repeated in the opposite direction. First to three goals wins then change teams.
Progress by adding a second attacker then a second defender.
