Combination challenge

This concentrated session really tests your players’ passing, receiving, awareness and movement off the ball.

What this session is about

  1. Attacking principles – e.g. quick passing, pulling wide to create space.
  2. Possession.

What to think about

  • Move off the ball to make sure you’re seen by the player with the ball and to create space.
  • Demonstrate good passing and receiving technique, considering factors such as the “weight” and timing of the pass, as well as using the first touch to “cushion” the ball into space.
  • Take a “picture” – observe where team mates and opposition players are before receiving the ball. That includes glancing over the shoulder to see what is behind.
  • Know where your next pass is going before receiving the ball.
  • Communicate.

What you get your players to do

Play 2v2 inside a 15-yard square with two additional players from each team on opposite sides outside the square.

One of the outside players passes into the square to a team mate who must combine with his team mate inside the square and get the ball to the other server who controls and passes the ball back in.

Play for one minute then switch outside and inside players round.

Progress by allowing outside to pass directly to each other so team mates inside the square must react quickly to take the next pass.

Progress further by making it a maximum of two touches.

The team looks to pass the ball from one side of the square to the other – and then back.

Development

Play 2v2 inside an eight-yard square with two additional players from each team on opposite sides outside the square.

This time each team has its own ball which must be passed from outside to outside via inside square player combinations. After a set time, switch players round.

Progress by allowing one server to pass to the other server directly.

As before but this time the teams have a ball each.

Game situation

Set up a 20-yard square and two teams of four. Start by playing 4v1 and increase the number of defenders by one every 30 seconds until it is a 4v4. The winning team is the one who makes the most successful passes in two minutes. Then switch round the outnumbered team last time begins with the numerical advantage.

To progress, play two-touch.

Play 4v1 and add a defender every 30 seconds until it becomes a 4v4.
