This week’s session improves your goalkeeper’s active participation during the game. The practices will develop a range of techniques from footwork, starting positions, passing and receiving and communication.

What to think about
Goalkeeping can be a lonely job. The keeper is often not required for long periods of the game and then must be at his very best to make an important save. This means a goalkeeper requires excellent concentration skills. He can help develop his concentration by being more active in the game. By following the ball at all times and taking up a position that allows him to offer constant communication and support to the defence, he will be more involved.

What you get your players to do
Mark out an area, as shown in the top picture. The first goalkeeper throws the ball to one of two opposing players, who start at the corners farthest away.
Immediately the two defenders, positioned at corners either side of the keeper, race out to defend 2v2.
The goalkeeper now communicates with defenders to give information and demands.
The aim is for defenders to block shots or force opponents wide to decrease the chance of scoring and give the goalkeeper an easier save to make. If defenders win the ball, they can attack the opponent’s goal.
Goalkeepers take turns in starting this game.
On a full-size pitch, mark out extra lines and cone goals, as shown in the middle picture.
The role of the goalkeeper is to take up a good position in relation to the ball. If the ball is far away (1), the goalkeeper (1) takes up a high position (farther away from his goal) to force the defenders to squeeze higher up the pitch and away from the cone goals.
If the ball is closer to the goal (2 and 3), the goalkeeper (2 and 3) and defenders drop deeper. The goalkeeper must remain behind the cone goals and give players information on how to defend effectively. When the goalkeeper has the ball, he can distribute both short and long passes to his team mates. The aim for the teams is to score a point by dribbling through one of the gates Once through the gates, the team is then allowed to go on and score an extra point by scoring past the goalkeeper in the big goal. The offside rule is in place in this game.
Play a small-sided game in which goalkeepers are not allowed to be tackled. This rule encourages the team to use the goalkeeper more often. This also gives the goalkeeper confidence to take a more active role in his team’s build-up process. The offside rule is used in this game and the team that scores most goals wins.
