Play through the thirds and create attacking overloads in this three-part session. By MATTHEW MOUNTFORD MORE
Help improve your players’ movement off the ball so they can support play and create goalscoring opportunities.

Set up an area with players at each end while two players work in the middle of the area.
Players at each end take it in turns to combine with the middle players in order to cross the area. They can either:
Rotate the middle players after one or two minutes.
Use an area with a goal at each end and set up the mannequins/poles and your players, as shown in the middle picture.
One team works, until all players have played in each position, while the other team rests. Three players from one team work at the same time.
Player 1 to the left of the goal passes to player 2. Player 2 must now:
The players move up to work each role on the circuit (a new player replaces player 1, player 1 moves to player 2’s position, player 2 moves to player 3’s position and player 3 leaves the pitch).
Set up an area with teams and mannequins/poles for a small-sided game, as shown in the bottom picture.
The white team mainly defends and has two forwards inside the opposite half of the pitch. The grey team attacks and has all of its players in one half of the pitch. It places a forward on each side of the goal as target players.
All restarts begin with the grey team. It attacks the white team’s goal and can pass to its target players in order to run and receive a return pass to score. If the white team wins possession, it can pass forward to one of its attackers in the opposite half and then one white midfielder must run to combine with the forwards to shoot at goal.
