I run a team of Under-15s who start games slowly. How can I prepare them so they start more quickly?
Sounds something isn’t clicking with the boys. Two things I would do: Play a basketball style warm up game in the penalty area with two teams – five passes to score a point a player tagged with the ball loses it to the opposition. Simple game but gets minds thinking positively about moving and passing. Also not much chance of any injuries as it’s a handball game.
Also try short sprints with or without the ball. Again simple set up using three cones, put one down and pace five yards put the second cone down now change direction slightly and pace another five yards.
Get players to sprint quickly through the cones without the ball then with the ball. Don’t do it for long, just a few minutes before you prepare to go onto the pitch.
