WEEK THREE: STRIKE FROM MIDFIELD

If you want your team to hit the net more often, it’s time you realised that possession of the ball in midfield is vital to supplying the ammunition for your attackers to fire at goal.

Watch players like David Silva at Manchester City, Jordan Henderson at Liverpool and Jorginho at Chelsea and you will understand the type of player capable of linking midfield to the forward line with aplomb.

One of the players best able to play forward into attacking situations in this manner has been Pogba at Manchester United. He is a great reader of the game, very aware of the next pass and rarely gives the ball away.

Pogba loves linking midfield to attack by exploiting any space he sees, cutting out the opposition midfield to advance his team up the pitch.

Youth teams can learn a lot from this type of player, but most importantly when they have the ball in midfield you must teach them to create space and be patient so the channels open up to allow them to make Pogba-style passes into the runs of their own forwards.

The two sessions below are designed to create space for these type of players to exploit.

TOP TIPS FOR PLAYING FORWARD FROM MIDFIELD

If you want your team to score more goals, make sure they play accurate passes out of midfield to the attackers…
> Look to spread the ball wide to drag the opposition out of position and create space to exploit.
> Get strikers to run into areas they can receive the ball.
> Midfield passes should be into the run of the strikers – accurate and played with the right weight to run onto.
> Players must be patient and wait for the opportunities to arise for good passing moves throughout the midfield.
> If the ball is lost, press immediately to win it back.
