An end-to-end game that will help your players to develop a goal poacher’s instincts by limiting strikers to just one touch in the final third of the pitch MORE
Stay composed in the box like Harry Kane
If ever there was a soccer match that highlighted the importance of an attacker staying cool in the penalty box, it was England’s opening World Cup 2018 match against Tunisia.
While players like Jesse Lingard and John Stones were making a mess of clear-cut scoring chances, England’s talismanic captain Harry Kane demonstrated the calmness and composure required to convert the opportunities that came his way.
You can be sure that Harry Kane’s composure has developed through putting himself in those positions time and time again on the training ground, and you can help your players do the same with my activity called Poacher. It’s a simple drill that gives strikers plenty of chances to score in the box with quick-fire balls coming in from all angles.
Follow up that drill by putting players in a match-like situation. Score one touch is a small-sided game that will test your strikers’ ability to put a ball away first time and under pressure.
Even if your strikers don’t develop into World Cup competitors, I’m sure you’ll find their confidence in front of goal will improve and that will reflect positively on the scoresheet!
