Soccer drill to try at home
Homework is probably not a popular word with your young soccer players and it’s not something you normally associate with soccer coaching but it can make for better players. Ask them to try some keepy-uppies, passing against a wall – any move that gets them controlling a ball.
I like this soccer drill. You don’t exert too much energy but you certainly get to know a ball. And if you fall over by accident, no-one gets to see. You are holding the ball away from an opponent in this soccer drill – the wall being your opponent.
There is a knack to this soccer drill which is only gained by practice. At home tell your soccer (football) players to lean against the wall with their shoulder as though it is an opponent. They need to imagine someone is trying to take the ball off them.
They should practise rolling the ball around with their foot, moving around and getting into position to make a killer pass. They should be able to keep their balance and learn to move around while in control of the ball.
When they come to soccer training, turn the soccer drill into a game where the defender gets a goal if he can steal the ball or kick it away before the count of five, while the attacker gets a goal if he can hold onto the ball to the count of five.
