Counter from deep – practice 1

WHY USE IT

This three-part session provides players with an opportunity to understand and perform the key principles of counter attacking. Concentrating specifically on playing quickly after winning the ball from deep areas.

SET UP

Set up an area relevant for the group of players you are working with. A rectangle grid is laid out by placing a cone or mannequin in each corner, plus one in the centre of the grid as well. The players are then spread out across the four corners of the rectangle, with just one player positioned in the centre of the grid. For larger number of players, more than one grid should be set-up.

HOW TO PLAY

The players are given three different patterns to follow that consist of quick forward play and a variation of movements and forward runs. The players are then given the freedom to combine together in whatever way they want to.

COACHING POINTS

When possible, players should play one touch, using fast and accurate passing that allows their team-mate to play forward quickly. Whilst the players movement should be timed correctly to allow them to meet the pass.

1. Players begin with a passing pattern

2. The passing pattern can be changed to involve more movement off the ball

3. Add a third passing pattern to provide players with another solution
