The Coach’s View
This sets up play for a late run to the edge of the penalty area, resulting in a shot across the goal. You can play it from either side of the pitch, and the key to making this set piece work is the movement of three players involved.
The set piece can go wrong if the final pass is not a good one, leaving the team under threat from a quick counterattack, so you must make sure there are players covering outside the penalty area. The shot needs to be well timed and accurate, and because it is taken from the edge of the penalty area it needs a player who can kick the ball hard. Make sure you get players to follow up the kick because rebounds off defenders or the goalkeeper will happen.
