Apply pressure, regain possession and then use the ball in this three-part session. By MICHAEL PHILP MORE
This practice develops players’ awareness and ability to execute a high-press system, while it can also be used to support defenders and midfielders in playing out from the back.
Set up using just over half a pitch, with a full-size goal at one end and three mini goals at the other. Teams play 7v7 outfield, with one goalkeeper in the full-size goal and one goalkeeper serving from the side of the pitch.
The resting goalkeeper serves the ball into the active goalkeeper to start the practice. The goalkeeper looks to play out to a full- back, which is the trigger for the defending team to press. The defending team aims to win possession high and score in the full-size goal, while the attacking team looks to score in the three mini goals.
The angle and speed of approach and body shape of pressing defenders is crucial to set traps and work together as a unit. Players should also be aware of covering passing lanes and ensuring sufficient balance and cover is in place when pressing.
