The shooting range – small-sided game

WHY USE IT

Adding options for service allows for players to be creative in how they finish (by cross, first time, etc.). Unopposed service into the attack from the wings minimizes poor service and creates more opportunities.

SET UP

Set up with three teams of four, plus two goalkeepers.

HOW TO PLAY

Play 4v4, with four neutral players and two goalkeepers. The team that scores stays on and goes towards the opposite goal. Neutrals must play one-touch. The team that concedes swaps with neutral players.

Progression: If it’s too difficult for neutrals, allow two-touch. If it is too easy for finishing, require first-time goals only.

COACHING POINTS

Movement: How can the addition of wide players give players more options? Can you make runs that create space to shoot? Where are your best chances to score?

Awareness: Do you have options to pass/receive the ball? Are you able to get a clear shot? If not, can your teammate?

Ball skill: How can you move a defender to create a shot?

Body shape: Focus on proper form on the shot. If the ball did not go where you wanted, which aspect of your shape caused it? Make the adjustment on your next shot.
