A quick guide to the various options midfielders have when they get on the ball
Teams keep possession in different circumstances by passing the ball. This means a number of different passes have to be used - here’s a checklist:
This type of pass causes defenders the most problems. They have to turn and recover quickly before the attackers pounce. The aim is to invade the space behind defenders.
A more direct approach – often the attacker will have his back to goal and be in a great position to set up supporting players.
Teams play with fast passing movements The defenders have to adjust their positions and move to counter the forward movement of the team.
If the attack is on one side and there are too many players congested in a tight area, it means there will be space on the other side. The attackers should be ready to exploit it.
The supporting player should have the time, space and field of vision to play the ball forward or dribble forward with the ball.
