Shooting gallery

Give players game-like situations to enable them to work together to create scoring chances

WHY USE IT

All young players like to score goals and practice shooting in drills - but this activity puts them more into game-like situations, and realistically limits the shooting opportunities for players.

SET UP

You need balls, bibs, cones and two goals. Mark out an area appropriate to the number and age of your players, with a goal at each end and a square in the centre of the pitch. We have shown 10 players and a server in a 32x22 yard area.

HOW TO PLAY

Players are put into two teams of four, and then split into two groups so they start in opposite corners. As the coach plays a ball in, the players come out from each corner to create a 2v2 (plus goalkeepers). The coach passes the ball into a player on one side who must dribble into the middle area before passing to their team mate who checks back for the ball. The player can also dribble to beat the defender or take a shot. The only requirement is they must be in the middle section of the grid. Advance the session so that goals scored from the middle box count as three points (anywhere else: 1 point). Then add an extra player for the attacking team.

COACHING POINTS

This activity emphasizes passing, receiving, dribbling and finishing.

1. Session starts with one pair of players from each team entering the pitch to create a 2v2 – the server plays a ball in to one of the teams

2. Players link up and try to score goals but can only shoot from the central box

3. Here, players can score from anywhere - but goals from outside the box only earn one point while goals from inside earn three points

4. Players must move quickly to gain control of the centre box and make use of space to score a goal

5. Now an extra attacker is allowed to come on to give the attacking team a 3v1 overload
