An explainer from Dave Clarke’s Soccer Tactics Made Simple
Low press describes a defensive tactic in which a team sits back and allows the opposition to attack, with the aim of winning the ball and making a counter attack. Teams use a low press to remain tight and compact inside their own half. This reduces space for opposing players and stops them passing into the space behind the defense. When the opposition is inside the defensive team’s half, the defending team can apply pressure to regain the ball and launch a fast counter attack.
