Allow players to practise pressing in a game-realistic environment.
This small-sided game allows players to practise pressing in a game-realistic environment.
Mark out a playing area relative to the age and ability of your players. Split the pitch into equal thirds (with flat markers if available) with a goal at each end.
Split players into two teams. Play must always be built up through the thirds. Both teams aim to win possession as high up the pitch as possible, with the scoring system rewarding success. Teams get three goals for scoring after winning possession in the final third, two goals for scoring having won possession in the middle third, and one for scoring having won possession in their defensive third, or having built up play from their own restart. Players are allowed anywhere on the pitch but can use the thirds as reference points.
Coaches should encourage teams to recognise when to press (e.g. a poor touch or backwards pass) and to then work as a unit to press. Work on body shape, angle and speed of approach when closing down, cutting off passing lanes, and providing cover and balance.
