Make poke tackles in a 1v1
“See the ball with an opponent” • “Try to get the ball” • “Use any part of the foot”
Set up a 5 x 5 yards area with a 2 x 2 yards square in the centre. Place a ball in the centre and two players on diagonally opposite corners of the area.
When you say “go”, the players run into the square to contest the ball. You don’t want them charging in as they should only be pressing at first.
The player that wins the ball must keep control of it for as long as possible.
The player without the ball must try and press his opponent looking for a chance to make a poke tackle.
Play this for 1 or 2 minutes so the players get used to the idea of holding up play and using poke tackles to win the ball. The two players should stay inside the area but at first they may find that difficult. You can make the area bigger or allow them to go out of it.
Press the player with the ball and use any part of the foot to “poke” the ball away from his control
How many players do I need?
