Because football is ultimately about scoring more goals than the opposition, your players should be regularly practising their shooting skills. Use “Simple shooting” to work on your players’ accuracy in front of goal. This session will also help your goalkeepers work on positioning and making reaction saves.

What this session is about

- Gaining confidence to shoot with either foot.
What to think about
- Weight of pass.
- To create power use the instep with toes pointed down and the ankle locked.
- For an outside of right/left foot swerve, use the outside of the instep and strike the ball left/right of centre.
- For an inside of right/left foot swerve, use the area around the joint of the big toe and strike the ball right/left of centre.
- For a sidefoot, strike the horizontal mid-line of the ball.
- Follow through.
Set-up
Set up playing areas measuring 15 yards by 10 yards with a goal at one end and use several footballs. Have two players in each playing area.

What you get your players to do
One player starts in goal, with the other shooting (the attacker). The attacker passes the ball a short distance to one side and shoots.
Make sure the attackers vary the side they shoot from so they get used to using either foot, and the distance from goal.
After, say, five shots from both the left and right sides, the players switch roles.
