Sprint to it
Increasing the sprinting speed of your team will have them reaching the ball faster than their opponents all over the field and can change the outcome of a match.
What this session is about
- Improving basic speed.
- Improving acceleration.
- Improving reaction time.
What to think about
- Keep head and shoulders steady.
- Lean forward slightly.
- Only front part of foot touches the ground.
- Keep arms working next to, not across, the body.
- Lift knees.
- Drive forward with each stride.
- Pump arms to chin height.
- Use one end of a pitch with a goal and goalkeeper.
- Split players into two lines at angle approx 25m from goal.

What you get your players to do
The first players in line begin by jogging on the spot. The server, or coach, standing between the two lines then passes the ball into space for them to chase. The first player to the ball wins the chance to hold off their opponent and take a shot at goal. Repeat with next pairing.
Make sure players switch partners.
Move both lines of players to approach the goal from an angle to the other side of the goal.
Repeat, but this time the players start with their back to goal a few metres from their team-mates, and must tag the next player in line before turning for the ball.
Set up a playing area approx 15x10m with 4 players. Going in pairs, the first 2 players – ‘A’ and ‘B’ – start at the same end, with the ball placed centrally. On the command of one of the other players not participating, they sprint to the ball. Player A must try to dribble the ball over the line at the far end, while player B attempts to dribble the ball over the line both players started at. If a player is successful they get a point.
Next 2 players repeat.
Each pair has, say, 5 attempts each before players switch partners.
